Forum: GratefulDead Subject: The Sunday Song- Greatest Story Ever told

Greatest Story:

I was a little surprised to find that this tune even though it mentions 4 Biblical characters is actually not connected with the Bible in any literal sense.
There are 4 biblical heroes mentioned in Greatest story- Moses, Abraham and Isaac as well as Gideon.
They are all in the Old testament but nothing that they do in the song seems to have any connection to anything actually written about them in Scripture.
I suspect that what Hunter does here is take the story of the Pump at Mickey's Barn and give it Biblical overtones. You can be fairly certain that the title of the movie "Greatest story" is in view here,
So there are probably real life people represented by these Biblical characters.
I am guessing the whole thing with the Pump got talked about so much that it quickly took on epic proportions.
So Hunter wrote the lyrics along those lines.
Bobby not to be outdone was probably like, well Moses didn't ride in on a guitar ,
He rode in on a QUASAR. (Now that is epic!)
The curious thing about Greatest Story to me is the last verse with "The Water Witch spell"
I will tell you right now there is nothing like that anywhere in the Bible.
So again I am thinking it must have had something to do with events at Mickey's barn.
I wonder if Mickey leaving the band for awhile had anything to do with the roots of the song not getting discussed very much? Maybe the roots of the story reminded people within the band of the bad business dealings with Mickey's dad or something.( Like you can't explain the whole song without getting into that story so better to just drop it.)
Yet the song itself cooks especially for a tune that was clocking in at 3 minutes and change.
Whatever the case 'Greatest Story' certainly got a lot of mileage from the band. I always did get that feeling of something epic going on in the song even if I had no clue what exactly that was.
Lately I have been listening to Donna's vocals on this tune she could get really amped up on this song.
